ROOTS ENSEMBLE |
| |
“Roots” ensemble was
first started in 2000 by Massoud Shaari & Arash Mitooie.
Concerning music as a specific language for the communication
between different cultures & different people, they have
produced a genre in music in which musical instruments can cooperate
with each other freely and with no limitation; while their independent
identity & personality is preserved. They use eastern themes
- especially Iranian ones- and improvisation in their works.

Massoud Shaari was born in 1961 in Tehran , Iran
. From the very childhood he was deeply attached to Iranian
music. He took lessons of Iranian instruments; “Santour”
(Declimer), “Tar” and “Setar” from several
great maters such as “Hormozi” , “Forutan”
, “Bahari” , “Lotfi” , “Manijeh
Alipour” and became fully familiar and acostumed to the
Iranian classical music.
Great interest in Setar lead him to Hossein Alizadeh, and in
fact his artistic promotion is indebted to this valuable master
of Iranian music.
Shaari has always tried to reconstruct the works of the pioneer
masters of music and this high goal resulted in creation of
two albums, "Shabahang" and "Karevan-saba".
Beside his complete control over traditional Persian music,
Shaari has an absolutely free insight of music. He tries to
restore the lost elements of Iranian music such as forgotten
rhythms and melodies, and mix them with modern music.
For the past ten years he has been teaching Setar under his
special teaching method and theory of traditional Persian music
in various credible places like Art Faculty of Azad University,
Tehran Art University, Kamkars’ Music Center and His self
established music teaching center, “Hamsaz”.
So far, Shaari has released 5 albums. His last album is called
" Seir ". Shaari’s current activities include
: Teaching Setar, compiling research books and giving many concerts
in Iran and abroad. |

Arash Mitooie
Born in 1970, Arash Mitooie was brought up in a musical family.
His mother Sima Bina, a prominent musician and singer in Persian
Folk Music, arranged for him to take piano lessons at the age
of 7 as she discovered his great talent for music. Arash steadily
continued his study for 5 years and mastered basics of western
music. Being surrounded by Iranian traditional music, he also
started playing the setar (a Persian instrument) at the age
of 12. Later on as a teenager, he grew to love the western pop
music and started teaching himself to play the guitar. Soon
he mastered the rock, rock’n roll and blues styles and
formed his own band. He has recorded two albums in which he
has done experiments in combining the Iranian music and poetry
with western pop-rock (including songs written on the poetry
of “Haafez” – a celebrated 16th century Iranian
poet). Today he continues his composition experiments and plays
the guitar with great artists such as “Massoud Shaari”. |
